2014 Makeup Favourites

2014 Beauty Favourites

It’s time for my 2014 Makeup Favourites here on Meg’s Makeup Bag. I know everyone says it, but I cannot believe that 2014 is over, it feels like it’s gone by so quickly! I really enjoyed going through my products to select my favourites, because it was a mini year in review for me. Each product brought back memories of places I wore it, or posts I wrote about it. If you’re a regular on my blog, none of these favourites will surprise you. They’ve all been mentioned on the blog before, and for good reason, they’re all products I absolutely love. There’s a mix of high and low-end products, with Charlotte Tilbury representing the majority of the high-end products (they’re just so good!)

The prevailing trend you’ll notice with all these products is that they are products that are great quality, easy to use and long wearing. I love makeup, and I definitely love playing around with makeup, however on a day to day basis, I don’t have time to play around, I need products that will work exactly as they are suppose to and make applying them easy. So without further ado, here in no particular order, are my 2014 Makeup Favourites.

I have a lot of eyeshadow palettes, they’re one of my favourite makeup products to buy, I love how one product offers so many possibilities. This year I’ve picked up a bunch of amazing palettes, including the Lorac Pro and Pro 2 palette. My favourite however is definitely The Two Faced Chocolate Bar Paletteand not just because it smells like chocolate! I love the rich shade selection and the great mix of shimmers and mattes. I think my favourite part is that while it’s definitely a neutrals palette, it has some shades with amazing pops of colour. I’m such a huge fan that I ordered the Semi-Sweet Palette the moment it came out (there’s a review coming later this week). You can read my review of the Two Faced Chocolate Bar Palette for more details and swatches.

My favourite high-end brand of 2014 was definitely Charlotte Tilbury, since the brand launched in the US this past September I’ve been seriously hooked. I can honestly say I haven’t been disappointed by a single product I’ve bought. It was hard to narrow down, but of all the products my favourites are definitely the Filmstar Bronze & Glow, the Cheek to Chic Blush in First Love and the Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder. The types of products are not unique, there are tons of contour kits, blushes and pressed powders on the market. What makes the products unique are the formulations. They make using the products effortless, the Filmstar Bronze & Glow makes contouring a dream while the Cheek to Chic Blush gives a gorgeous glow and the Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder really does make your skin look airbrushed.  You can read more of my ravings about Charlotte Tilbury here.

2014 was the year I finally embraced the red lip and the Revlon Colour Stay Moisture Stain in New York Scene was definitely abig part of that. It’s a gloss that fades into a stain and makes wearing a red lip easy and effortless. Indeed, all of the Colour Stay Moisture Stains are amazing! They make wearing a bold lip easy, and I love how by fading into a stain I don’t have to reapply. The MAC Lip Pencil in Half Red was also a favourite. It’s a lovely wine coloured red, which can be worn alone with some gloss, or used with a gloss or a lipstick for a full on look. Before picking up Half Red, I didn’t really see the point of lip pencils. Since purchasing it, I’ve become a convert to lip pencils, I love the definition they give to my lips. My other lip favourite is the Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stain in Honey, which earns the title of my favourite ‘my lips but better’ lip colour of 2014. It has lived in my purse for most of 2014, so much so that labelling has completely worn off. I love that how low maintenance it is, plus the minty smell. It’s definitely my perfect ‘my lips but better colour’.

2014 Favs - Revlon

My favourite primer and foundation this year are both drugstore products, that’s not for lack of trying high-end brands! For foundation, the Bourjois 1 2 3 Perfect Foundation was an easy pick as my favourite. It has amazing coverage that can be sheered out for a light ‘no makeup look’ or build up for a more medium to high coverage, all without looking cakey and while wearing beautifully throughout the day. Paired with the Almay Smart Shade Primerit’s a combo that I haven’t been able to top. I’m almost finished my second bottle of the Almay primer, which says a lot because I rarely finish makeup products. This primer evens out my skin tone, extends the wear of my foundation and keeps any oil at bay, without any silicone.

2014 Favs - Base

I seriously love cream eyeshadow products, they’re my go-to on a daily basis because they’re so quick and easy to apply. Needless to say, I have tried tons of cream eyeshadows and my favourites by far this year are Maybelline Colour Tattoos. There are so many great textures and shade options available, and the formula is super creamy and doesn’t budge, even on my super oily eyelids. My go-to is definitely Bad to the Bronze, it’s the perfect bronzey brown that takes seconds to apply, but makes it look like I put effort into my eye makeup. The other Maybelline product in my favourites is their Brow Drama Mascara, which makes embracing a bold brow easy.

November 2014 Favourites

November 2014 Favourites

Well it’s once again Favourites time! November has flown by, this month had the Sephora VIB Sale, my birthday, Spark Sessions and IMATS. As I managed to do some serious hauling this month, I’m still testing a bunch of the products, so this months favourites are things that I have been using and loving throughout the month. It’s a mix of new products, and a couple of rediscoveries.

Benefit Gimme Brows in Light/Medium – I’ve had this brow gel for ages, but pulled it back out after I ran out of my Anastasia Brow Wiz. I forgot how easy it was to get amazing eye brows with this. A quick swipe of this across my brows and the sparse areas are filled in, and the brows are defined. Not sure I’ll ever go back to a pencil again.

Sonia Kashuk Eyeshadow Palette in Bare Necessities – Yup, that’s right. Another nude palette is being included in my favourites. I have a nude palette problem. Moving beyond that, this little palette packs a serious punch. The shades are warmer than most of my other nude eyeshadow palettes, and some are quite similar to the Naked 3 palette. There’s 5 shimmery shades and 1 matte, which normally I wouldn’t be a fan of, however these aren’t overly shimmery and are so buttery and easy to blend. Plus the size makes it great for travelling.

Maybelline Colour Tattoo in Bad to the Bronze – This is another rediscovery for me. This was probably the first colour tattoo I ever bought! It was well loved, but got pushed aside for other cream eyeshadows. It’s again in heavy rotation in my makeup bag. For days when I don’t have a lot of time, a swipe of this across my eyelid makes it look like I put in way more of an effort than I actually did. Plus, it stays all day.

Charlotte Tilbury The Retoucher in 2 Fair – I’m having a serious love affair with Charlotte Tilbury at the moment (and Beautylish who’s quick delivery helps enable the affair). The Retoucher is basically a hybrid between a concealer and a highlighter. As if YSL Touche Eclat and Nars Creamy Concealer had a beautiful rose gold baby. This is just the perfect concealer for under the eyes. It doesn’t crease or settle in my fine lines, plus it isn’t drying. On days when I’m going for a light base, I’ll use this to both conceal and highlight. Love love love.

Christian Dior Rouge Dior Baume in 788 Fleur Bleue – This is a new release from Christian Dior. It’s a lipstick/balm hybrid, which is super easy to apply, but packs a serious colour punch. I’m easing my way into wearing red lips, and this semi-sheer formula is perfect. It’s low maintenance and super hydrating, it’s definitely pricey but so gorgeous.

Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille – I am absolutely, 100% in love with this fragrance. It is just…I have no words. Picked this up at the Sephora VIB Sale, and have been wearing it non stop. It’s a sophisticated smokey vanilla scent, that I just cannot get enough of. It’s musky, yet feminine. I was pricey, even with the VIB discount, so I’m trying not to over use it, but man. It’s just amazing.

So there you have it, some serious ramblings about my favourite products of November.
